Fire Cider: Your Spicy Winter Side-Kick
Rooted in traditional herbalism, Fire Cider is a potent immune tonic made by steeping (and almost fermenting) various herbs in an apple cider vinegar base.
Traditionally taken as a daily tonic throughout winter, Fire Cider has been used to help support immune function, boost circulation and stoke that digestive fire - warming the body from the inside-out.
It’s a spicy little side-kick for when you need a gentle immune boost!
I chose these specific herbs for their unique actions against coughs, colds & flus but feel free to deviate from the recipe and use herbs that resonate with you!
KELLY’S SPICY FIRE CIDER
(Makes approx 1L)
Ingredients:
Chilli
Garlic
Ginger
Shallot (or Onion)
Lemon
Rosemary
Oregano
Thyme
Raw Honey
Apple Cider Vinegar (with the Mother)
Method:
Chop up all your delightful herbs and place them in a glass jar (approx 1L), it doesn’t have to be pretty, just fill up the jar until its about 2/3 full. Add a spoonful of raw honey, then pour the Apple Cider Vinegar over the herbs until she’s nice and full. Close the lid, secure properly (important!) and SHAKE!!!
Store the jar in a cool dark place for 4-6 weeks (ideally, but in a pinch a fortnight works as well). Once it’s been your selected amount of time, gently shake the mix before opening and strain the liquid through a nut milk bag (or similar). It should smell nice and herby at this point and have a beautiful deep colour to it.
Store the strained mix in sterilised glass bottles and keep in the fridge. Use throughout winter as a base for a morning ‘pick me up’ drink with warm water or just as a diluted shot throughout the day (you will only need 5-10mls daily).
And there you have it, a fun little herbal blend you can make ahead of time and keep on hand to get you through the winter season!
